Bike-Ski-Bike across Clackmannanshire continues in 2022

6 May 2022

Strathdevon Primary school in Clackmannanshire were highly commended in the 2021 Bikeability Scotland Awards for their fantastic Bike-Ski-Bike which got their children cycling to the nearest ski centre to ski and then cycling home again – an all-round three hours of outdoor activity through the lockdown.

This is a great example of one of the ways that schools can help pupils consolidate their Bikeability training by taking part in a fun activity.

Emma Tomlinson, Head Teacher, said that,

the children grew in fitness, confidence, independence and self-esteem as they biked along the old railway track to the Firpark Centre to ski for two hours before cycling back again.

They were great ambassadors for cycling, and for the school, because lots of people were out on their daily lockdown walks and as we passed they asked what we were doing, and when we told them we were combining our Bikeability training with skiing, they were delighted to hear it and to see the children so active and happy at a challenging time.

Every child was included in the initiative and we obtained trikes for the children who needed an adapted bike to be able to cycle and provided assistance so they could enjoy the skiing too.

In 2022 we have decided to continue our bike-ski-bike because it was so successful. 100% of P7’s are taking part this year so look out for us along the old railway line and up on the slopes this summer term

Emma Tomlinson would encourage every Primary school in Scotland to take up Bikeability.

Where there’s a will there’s a way”, she said, “and teachers can be highly creative at finding the way to get their children involved.  Cycling is a vital life skill and I am so proud that the children of Strathdevon are leaving school with that skill and the independence it gives them.  Learning to cycle safely enhances the children’s sense of self-esteem and feelings of confidence.

Teachers I’d urge you to Get in Touch with Bikeability Scotland and Sign up today. You’ll be so glad you did and so will your children.
