Give Cycle Space: Susan's story

14 May 2019

Susan Morrison is a mother and writer who live in Perth. She cycles for fun, fitness and to get from A to B.

When we asked her about what it's like to be overtaken too closely, she said: “close passing by drivers is a very common experience; while the majority of road users give me space, you do get some drivers who will pass too close, which is terrifying in itself but occasionally this is compounded by verbal abuse. I am confident enough to ride in the primary position, especially in urban areas, but it takes nerves of steel.

People seem to be judged differently depending on their chosen mode of transport. Today I might be on my bike but I am frequently a pedestrian and also drive different vehicles. We need to see each other as humans first and our mode of transport shouldn’t matter.”
