Glasgow Caledonian University staff and students join Pedal for Scotland

17 August 2018

GCU's Environmental and Sustainability Officer talks about the importance of cycling and how Pedal for Scotland can start this tradition.

We caught up with Paulo Cruz, the Environmental and Sustainability Officer at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) to discuss the work that the university does to help increase cycling as a viable option for staff and students as a mode of transportation.

“Pedal for Scotland provides an opportunity to individuals who are currently cycling or who are considering taking up the activity by presenting them with an accessible challenge with a tangible goal and reward. Training for the event allows individuals to build their confidence and proficiency on the road, allowing them to view cycling as a viable option for commuting.

At present around 50% of GCU students and staff live within cycling distance of the university and have the potential to be positively impacted by the benefits of cycling including improved health and wellbeing, and reductions in money spent on transportation.

Working in partnership with several external organisations, including Cycling Scotland, GCU is taking actions to help overcome the common barriers currently preventing students and staff from cycling to the university. So far, this has resulted in 3% of students and 10% of staff now cycling to the campus.

We’re all really looking forward to this year’s event and hope to see you there”
