While Glasgow is counting down to host to the UCI Cycling World Championships next month, Glasgow Sport is also carrying out an important project: to help their staff and visitors cycle for everyday journeys.

By providing bike parking and changing facilities, redeeming cycle mileage, organising cycle training and providing the Cycle to Work scheme, Glasgow Sport has achieved Cycling Scotland’s Cycling Friendly Award for eight key sites, including two UCI Games venues:

  • Emirates Arena
  • BMX Centre
  • Kelvin Hall
  • Tollcross International Swimming Centre
  • Scotstoun Sport Campus
  • Bellahouston Sport Centre
  • Milton Sport Centre
  • Springburn

In the run-up to, during and after the UCI Games, staff and visitors travelling to events at the city’s two host venues, can safely park their bikes at covered cycle storage at the Emirates Arena and take advantage of the new nextbike bike hire station at the BMX site.

Guang Xu from Glasgow Sport has been leading the employer project and working closely with operational staff and partners:

By encouraging staff to cycle, the accreditation recognises Glasgow Sport as an employer that prioritises the health and wellbeing of its employees. These policies and actions will undoubtably play an integral part in improving health and wellbeing of our staff, and we’re looking forward to seeing staff and visitors to our centres choose to get to us by bike.
